I swore I would never be one of those people. The one that stood in line at 4 a.m. to get a good bargain I swore I would never shop into wee hours of the morning. Then came my first Christmas with two kids on an extremely tight budget. My husband saw the ads with some items my oldest really wanted. So, going solo, I braved Wal-mart at mid-night. Wal-mart is not for the faint at heart on Black Friday. It was crazy, nothing like I have ever seen before. I felt as though I had hopped on the crazy train and I didn’t know when to get off.
Yet, I not only saved our family a ton of money. I also resisted the urge to buy needless items. The first year went into last year, when my mom and sister hopped on the train with me. We started at Wal-mart at midnight . After Wal-mart we headed to Target and stood in line until 2 or 3 a.m. freezing. Again, I saved lots of money while having a blast with my mom and sister. We have now turned into a girls family tradition. The dad’s stay home and hold down the fort, while the mom’s brave the crowds to seek the good deals.
I know many people have mixed feeling about Black Friday. There are feelings of love, hate, disgust, exhilaration, and just plain feelings of greed. My question to the mom’s out there is…do you really save that much money?
My answer is….YES! It is INSANE and to some its not worth it. In our house, I have a cash limit that I take with me. I do not spend over that and do not get more than we need. We also do not buy the girls more than three or four agreed upon gifts a piece. These are our boundaries. The last two years of doing this, I have talked with many people, who have said they would not have been able to afford Christmas if not for Black Friday. It’s an interesting phenomenon for me. For some many years, I boycotted the trend but now I have fully embraced the wild time.
On a side note, I do believe people become out of hand and at times act in strange ways for items. I have let things pass because at the end of the day, its just stuff and truly if I couldn’t get it, then we didn’t need it. I have this understanding when shopping on Black Friday.
What’s your take? Do you love or hate Black Friday?
