6 FALL DECOR TRENDS

Dear Pumpkin Spice Latte: Welcome back (and get in my belly). Same goes for you, apple picking, chili on the stovetop and changing leaves.

It’s safe to say that a bit of a fall junkie.

And since I’m also a home decor junkie, I am excited to begin cozying up our home for fall.

There really are a lot of easy ways to create a warm and cozy home for fall. And friends, school’s back in session and the calendar reads September, so it’s officially time.

I recently had the opportunity to attend an event all about home decor trends in Geneseo, Ill., hosted several local business owners. It got me instantly in the mood to decorate my home for the changing seasons – maybe you’ll feel inspired, too.

Here are a few ideas and trends to try to get your home ready for fall. These are coming straight from the experts – Cory from Designs on the Boulevard, Ashely from Mabel and Amy from Katsch.

Work in some natural elements.

Pumpkins and leaves are natural for fall. But there are lots of great natural elements that can help you bring the outdoors in. More ideas – natural textiles, cotton stalks, antlers, bark and even Indian corn.

Easy way to rock this trend: Pick some changing leaves from your yard or pick up a cotton stalk from a store.

Don’t forget a pop of green.

Just because it’s fall doesn’t mean your home has to be all red and gold. A pop of green is a great choice anytime – bring in a few houseplants for a mood booster this fall.

Easy way to rock this trend: Commit to a house plant this fall. Aloe vera is a great choice – it doesn’t need a lot of care and thrives indoors.

Mix old and new.

A mix of vintage and new items in your home makes it feel collected and intentional. This is also a great way to make your home feel more “you” over time. Some ideas: old pennants, rustic crates or signs, or family heirlooms (books are always a great choice). These are great ways to add some layers to your decor.

Easy way to rock this trend: Choose an old item you love to mix within your existing decor.

Metals are hot!

Mixed metals continue to be a hot trend this fall in home decor – you’ve probably seen this look in glossy magazines and store displays.

What makes it great? It’s easy to recreate – no need to worry about matching pieces. And if you don’t have anything copper, this fall is a great time to try it. Copper vases, mugs and bowls make great vessels for fall arrangements, too.

Easy way to rock this trend: Find something copper to work into your decor. I especially love vases and candle holders.

Layer, layer, layer.

Just like you bundle up when there’s a chill in the air, fall is the perfect time to add layers to your home.

This means a few new cuddly throws and layers of accessories on shelves or coffee tables. New to this? Start with a tray and add a few decorative items to the top for some layers – like a candle, plant and natural items. Your friends and family will think you’re a pro.

Easy way to rock this trend: Set up your own coffee table display with a few layers. And don’t let fall go by without finding a favorite cozy blanket for the sofa.

Don’t forget fall scents.

One thing you may forget about as you are readying your home for fall – how your home smells.

Every single place has a scent – even if you don’t realize it. Pick out some great new autumn or baking scents for the change of season. If you aren’t a candle fan, you could also try electric warmers, reed diffusers or even modern versions of potpourri. (The pumpkin version above is making a great addition to my kitchen decor.)

Easy way to rock this trend: Find your fall scent … TODAY! (My new favorite is Roasted Expresso by Swan Creek Candle Company. I picked it up at Designs on the Boulevard in Geneseo.)
