Okay, so I don’t think I actually own a pair of mom jeans yet, but my wardrobe has changed dramatically over the past few years. I went from dressing for fashion reasons to dressing for practical reasons. I haven’t had a consistent wardrobe for exactly 4 years and 9 months. I have separate clothes for maternity, nursing, “haven’t lost all the baby weight”, “someday maybe these will fit again”, and “I don’t leave the house – why get dressed”. Who made the rule that I can’t wear my p.j.’s to the grocery store anyway? I do (usually) put real clothes on when leaving the house, but I am more certain than ever that I have, in fact, lost all sense of style. I actually have 2 nice outfits and wear them over and over. So I hope you don’t see me two days in a row because changes are you may see me wearing the exact same thing! And if you do see me, please don’t judge! Shop for more clothes you say? I try, I really do, but I find more pleasure in shopping for my children than myself! Isn’t that a mom’s predicament? I have to dress myself and 3 kids everyday… and some days even my husband! No wonder my fashion sense is gone!
Whether shopping or looking through my closet, I always ask “does this hide my tummy”, “can I pull this shirt up to nurse without stretching it out”, “what will this look like with spit up all over it”, “is this dry clean only”, “have my friends seen me in this more than twice this week”, etc. “Blah” is usually what I end up saying as I throw on a sweatshirt! I know there are more pressing matters and fashion shouldn’t be on my list of stressors; however, it is and I fight with myself everyday (unless I just stay braless in an oversized t-shirt and sweatpants)!
And the extras? I only wear jewelry when I feel like asking my children a million times to stop pulling on it. I will start wearing perfume again when my baby isn’t rubbing his head in my neck and chest. I may wear high heels again when I am sure I won’t have to chase my toddler down in the parking lot! For now, it seems like tennis shoes, jeans, and a sweatshirt are my best bet!
I know all you moms have more style than me, so how do you stay fashionable in the midst of motherhood?
