Why My Family of Six is Perfectly Imperfect

People often ask me how we handle a family of six- or more precisely, how we handle a family with four daughters. I would like to share with you the reasons why my family of six is perfectly imperfect.

Before I get specific, you should know that our girls are respectively almost 10,  7,  5, and 2 years old. The age gaps between them are not too wide. I believe that this aspect is why our family of six is perfectly imperfect. my perfectly imperfect family of 6

First of all, know when in a family the females outnumber the only male, the result you get is only perfection. Girl power never disappoints! My husband likes living in a harem. He absolutely enjoys all the attention and affections of his five girls, the four little ones and a grown-up one. To be honest, he enjoys it less than he expects, because being the only male in the household, he believes that all his words would be followed as law.  Yet all of his girls are quick in talking back.

Our family of six is perfect when, all together, we sing out loud Frozen I and II soundtracks on Saturday morning while doing house chores together. One of us doesn’t enjoy it as much… guess who? It’s perfect when we all put our efforts to live more environmentally friendly.

Every time I see one of my older daughters taking care of her younger sister, or when she reads a book for her that she cannot read yet, I see the perfection in our family of six. Every time my girls happily share each other’s clothes or every time they fall asleep in the one bedroom they share.

Because of all the girls that live in our family, laundry is really an easy task: two loads of pink and purple a week!  Picking a movie to watch is not that hard if one of the characters is a princess, a singer, an actress or a vet. Playdates at our house sound like big parties because all the sisters end up playing with the guest friend. Trips to the local library, our happy place, are always enjoyed. Even extracurricular activities are easy to handle because my girls can attend classes together or at least two at a time, which is not bad.

As to why my family of six is perfectly imperfect, my family members can never, ever, and ever agree on what’s for dinner: there is always someone that doesn’t like it!  Hairbands, jewelry, and accessories are everywhere! It’s truly a challenge to keep those in a neat way. (I wish I could avoid talking about this, but hair clogs our sinks on a monthly basis!)

Fights at our house are not common, but when they do happen, they are extremely loud! My little monsters use their nails or pull hair, whether in self-defense or to make their reasons clear, I don’t know.  Silence is a luxury I enjoy only when school hours coincide with nap time.

Getting ready to go anywhere is a long process and I guarantee that anytime we are about to jump in the car someone needs to go to the restroom!  Drama is still not a big problem so far, but I am very worried for the day puberty will knock at my daughters’ door and hormonal moods will transform the balance of our daily life.

In our  perfectly imperfect family of six, we truly adore our only family man. We need his calmness, his rational thoughts, his objectivity. We miss him so much when he travels for work and we don’t mind if, to escape from all our female pheromones, he barricades himself in his basement man cave!

We are a family of six. Only one man, five girls. Loud, messy, sometimes hysterical, but yet, full of love. So perfectly imperfect.
